Due to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) – part of GCHQ – has issued a warning to organisations to bolster their online defences.

In light of this new stark warning, we are now recommending our clients follow their guidance on steps to take when the cyber threat is heightened.

Whilst no specific threat to UK organisations has been identified by the NCSC in relation to the events in Ukraine, improving your resilience to cyber threats now could reduce your risk of falling victim to such an attack in the future.

+ Members of Parliament Security

Bring about changes in MP security

The security for members of parliament has hit the headlines in the recent months, following the devastating and horrific attack on Sir David Amass during a constituency surgery. Since the attack on the 15th October 2021, changes have been brought in to review security protocols for MPs.

Speaking on the 20th October, The Home Secretary, The Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, addressed parliament:

I asked each police force to review the security arrangements for all Members with immediate effect.’ She continued by saying ‘I must update the House that the threat level facing members of this House is now deemed to be substantial.’

Lastly stating ‘I can assure the House that our world-class security and intelligence agencies and counter-terror police will now ensure this change is properly reflected in their operational posture.

Since this statement, MPs have been offered trained security protection when meeting constituents.

In a joint letter to MPs,Home Secretary Priti Patel and Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle

said reviews were being conducted into “appropriate policing support“.

To ensure constituents can continue to seek advice and support from their members of parliament in public building, such as churches and libraries, MPs are urged to take up the offer of protection from “security operatives”.

At Securitatem Consultancy, we understand first-hand the critical role protection plays for those within the public eye. Our close protection staff, all former military or police, work with the upmost discretion, professionalism and are currently working alongside  some Members of Parliament.

+ security considerations

Ten security considerations for your next event

Get valuable insights into planning your next event with our top 10 security considerations for events below:

1. Planning is key

Planning is crucial to operating a safe and secure environment for all attendees and stakeholders. Consider the inclusion of threat and risk assessments to plan for adequate responses to all identified concerns.

2. Know your attendees

Whether you require names, contact details or simply a total number of attendees, prepare accordingly and creating a safe environment with adequate capacity and infrastructure for all attendees and suppliers.

3. Get key services involved

Make enquiries in advantage to all required services, be it police, ambulance, or the fire service. Create clear and concise contingencies in conjunction with each service and all together to construct a coordinated incident response force. Your event security team should adopt the 5 JESIP principles, Joint Emergency Services Interoperability Programme, which outlines the correct joint agency response process.

4. Secure your entrance and exits

The entrance and exit points to your event will be key to maintaining security, allowing your team to operate a safe venue at all times. This area may require additional support including bag checks, staff to manage traffic flow or even turnstiles to automate entry.

5. Visible security is vital

To deter criminal activities, deploy security staff throughout the venue to visually enforce an authoritative presence. This also reassures attendees that their safety is a priority if an incident was to arise.

6. Keep track of digital threats

With so much information and communications done online now, it is worth considering a cyber assessment for any potential threats. Having the digital insights into your events threat level, allows vital preparations to be implemented to reflect any identified risks.

7. Get knowledge and expertise

If security is not your background, get experts who are in the know and have the experience to implement a coordinated security response. Professionals with years of experience in the security industry can pass on valuable knowledge to benefit you and your event.

8. Understand Lawful processes

You will need to consider any relevant legislation and regulations that may support a security presence at your event. The technical guidelines around public safety can be complex, so consider consulting your security supplier on what permits, licenses or insurance you may require. Ensure all security operatives for your event hold a current SIA license, as required by law.

9. Prepare for any scenario

From running scenarios ahead of time to on the day briefings, providing a security provision that is prepared and ready for all eventualities, brings assurance in not only the prevention of threats but the infrastructure to handle threats that may arise.

10. Choose the right supplier

If your event requires professional security, get a supplier who operates at the highest level. There are no short cuts in providing a safe environment and ensuring your provider operates with integrity and forthrightness is key. Choose a supplier with the correct training, accreditations, and insurance to supply appropriate event security.
